Church CovenantHaving been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, and on profession of our faith, having been baptized into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and recognizing our complete dependence upon the Holy Spirit for the strength to overcome human weakness and achieve the standards of this covenant, we do now, in the presence of God and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.
We agree, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit,
-
to read and apply the Word of God as we find it in the Scriptures,
-
to communicate continually with God through prayer and praise, and
-
to walk humbly with our Maker in daily dependence upon Him.
We also agree -
to encourage our families and friends in the Christian life,
-
to maintain family devotions and to educate our children in the things of Christ,
-
to seek the salvation of our families and acquaintances,
-
to avoid intolerance, gossip, and excessive anger,
-
to be slow to take offense but always ready for reconciliation, always mindful of our Savior's command to seek it without delay.
We further agree -
to be witnesses to Christ in the world,
-
to walk circumspectly, to be just in our dealings, faithful in our commitments, and exemplary in our conduct.
-
to watch over one another in brotherly love,
-
to remember one another in prayer, and
-
to aid one another in sickness and distress,
-
to cultivate sensitivity of feeling and courtesy in speech, and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior.
We moreover agree, as part of the body of Christ and acting corporately as a local church
- to walk together in Christian love,
-
to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge, holiness, comfort, and strength,
-
to promote its prosperity and spirituality,
-
to sustain its worship, ordinances, disciplines, and doctrines,
-
to contribute cheerfully and regularly with our tithes and offerings for the support of its ministry, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel throughout the world,
-
and, if we leave this place, to unite with some other church of like faith and practice where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God's Word.
